Attic Heat Resistance Methods
The attic space is a vital part of the energy efficiency of a house. Proper insulation and ventilation control heat flow, keeping the house warm in winter and cool in summer. A well-insulated attic prevents the loss of heated air through duct leaks and prevents the overheating of living areas below the ceiling in the summer.
The Insulation Contractor choice of insulation material depends on local climate conditions and installation requirements. A range of insulation products is available from inexpensive fiberglass batts to premium spray foam. Each type has its own advantages and installation requirements.
Professional Attic Evaluation Tips
Blown-in insulation is often the best choice for attics with a wide variety of obstructions such as piping and ductwork. This type of insulation is introduced into the attic space with a specialized hose, allowing for precise placement and ensuring an even distribution that minimizes air leakage. In addition, blown-in insulation can be easily placed around obstructions without damaging existing attic floor insulation.
For an attic with a sloped ceiling, consider adding rigid board insulation to reduce thermal bridging between the ceiling and wall plates. The wall plate should also be air sealed, and the space around recessed lighting fixtures and penetrations should be sealed.
If the attic is unobstructed, add a layer of blanket or loose-fill insulation to cover the existing attic floor. Make sure that the new insulation is at least as thick as the attic joist spacing, and ensure that it is evenly distributed and covers all gaps, voids and seams.
